Privacy Policy

Last updated 6 September 2026

Split is a tool for splitting shared expenses and tracking personal spending. It runs entirely in your browser. This policy explains what that means for your data.

The short version

Split has no accounts, no server, and no database. Everything you enter is stored only on the device you enter it on. It is never transmitted to us or to anyone else, and we have no way to see it.

What Split stores on your device

The following is saved in your browser’s local storage so the app still has your ledger when you come back:

  • Your name and the identity colour you pick.
  • Friends you add — the names and colours you give them. You choose what to enter here; if you add someone else’s name, that stays on your device too.
  • Groups, and who is in them.
  • Expenses, payments, settlements and personal expenses — amounts, dates, categories, notes and how each one is split.
  • Budget totals and per-category limits.
  • Your light or dark theme preference.

There is no analytics, no advertising, no tracking pixels, and no third-party embeds. Split sets no cookies. The fonts are bundled with the app and are not fetched from a third party at runtime.

Hosting

The Split website is served as static files by Vercel. Like any web host, Vercel processes standard technical request information (such as your IP address and browser user-agent) to deliver the page and for security. That data is handled under Vercel’s privacy policy. Split itself sends nothing to Vercel or anyone else beyond the initial request for the page and its assets.

Deleting your data

Open You and choose Erase everything to delete every group, expense, friend and settlement from the device. Clearing your browser’s site data for Split does the same thing. Because nothing is stored anywhere else, there are no backups — once it is cleared, it is gone.

Children

Split is not directed at children under 13.

Changes

If Split ever gains features that change how data is handled — for example optional syncing across devices — this policy will be updated before that feature ships, and the change will be described here.
